Vacation at Hale Kukui Orchard and Retreat
Welcome to our unique blissful vacation
experience that awaits you with
unmatched views anywhere from our 4.5
acre lush tropical property sitting back
safely on a 750' cliff and with several
short paths, a gulch with a swimming
hole, a 650' waterfall, flower gardens,
exotic palms, bamboos and a diverse
orchard to explore. Our attention to
service, quality and making your vacation
a unique experience makes us a leader in
the hospitality industry. At Hale Kukui we
offer intimate, relaxing private cottages,
each with a lanai (deck) with a private hot
soaking tub, a private bathroom and a
Kitchen fully stocked with the basics for
cooking or a Kitchenette (in the studio),
Wi- Fi, an outdoor grill and TV. Each of
our 3 Cottages can sleep between 2 and
6 people or more with the use of our air
mattresses if necessary. There is a
Yoga/massage/meditation/art studio with
an outdoor hammock surrounded breath-
taking views. There is a caretaker's house
where Paula and Dan are available 24/7 if
you have any needs or questions about
the area which is fairly central to all of the
tourist spots you might want to visit on the
island. Hale Kukui is probably the most
peaceful and beautiful part of the island
with a backdrop of the expansive Pacific
Ocean, our organic permaculture non-
commercial orchard for guests to enjoy.
Waipio Valley with it's famous waterfalls
cascading down 1000-2000 foot cliffs
running 23 miles in the direction of Maui
can all be seen from your bed on a clear
day. Waterfalls may vary in number based
on the recent rainfall. People have seen
up to 11 at one time not including our own
waterfall best seen from the black sand
beach below our property in Waipio
Valley. At Hale Kukui we strive to make
the customers come first.
Please use this web site to read about
our noteworthy press and customer
reviews! Explore possible adventures,
find special deals, arrange a massage,
yoga class or group retreat and
destination weddings for up to about 50
people. Ask about honeymoon specials,
recommendations for day trips and
restaurants.
Walk out to the bluff where there is
perhaps the best view on the Island.
Whales are often seen breaching during
winter and spring. Temperatures during
the day range typically between 75 and
85 F with cooler nights. Explore and try
nature's bounty that comes fresh from our
orchard with over 50 different fruits, nuts,
spices, citrus and perhaps as many
different orchids, heliconias, flowering
gingers and other flowers. We grow some
Kona coffee, cocoa, passion fruit,
coconuts,"magical" miracle berries,
cloves, true cinnamon, turmeric,
macadamia nuts, cashews, rambutan,
lychee, star fruit, mountain apple, sopote,
chocolate pudding tree, 11 avocado trees,
soursop, breadfruit, mangosteens,
mangos, papaya, jack fruit (the flavor of
"Juicy Fruit" bubble gum), several types
of citrus, bananas and much more.
Waipio Valley is one of the most beautiful
and touristed areas in Hawaii! At Hale
Kukui, you have complete privacy with
perhaps the best view of the Valley on the
Hamakua Coast! We may be able to loan
you a few bikes, snorkel gear, yoga mats,
boogie board and point you in the
direction that you might want to explore
around the island. We are only 1/2 mile
from the Waipio Lookout and another mile
by road down into the valley.
Some of the best restaurants on the
island are in the nearby Hawaiian cowboy
country, Waimea. In the immediate area,
you can find horseback riding, ATVs,
jogging, bicycling, swimming, surfing,
hiking or going to Honoka'a for the
farmers market and this quaint little
shopping town has a theater just 10
minutes away. International airports in
Hilo and Kona are fairly equidistant with
easy drives on excellently marked paved
roads. Waimea is about 25 minutes away
with some amazing food, an airport to
"island hop" and more shopping.
Read on for a sense of proximity to
destination points and nice day trips.
Volcanoes National Park and the hot
springs in Pahoa are an easy day trip
through Hilo which has a large outdoor
market every weekend.
See the beautiful Hamakua coast, Akaka
falls and the famous botanical gardens
along the way if you set out early. In the
opposite direction through Waimea, there
is an easy drive to the white sand
beaches on the dry desert side of the
island and the top of Mauna Kea with its
observatories 14,000 feet above sea
level. It is taller than Mount Everest from
the sea floor up and snow can often be
seen on the top for the adventurous skier
during the winter months! Some of the
world's best Marlin fishing, scuba and
snorkeling are an easy drive to Kona! We
are fortunate at Hale Kukui with almost
always clear skies compared to Kona's
VOG (Volcanic Fog). Several helicopter
tours are also available. See our activities
page for more!
